West Florida Falls Short in Elimination Round to North Alabama, 7-2

May 5, 2008

Box Score

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - UWF lost their second game of the GSC Championship tournament to UNA on Saturday evening, preventing any further advance in the tournament. UNA took control of the bats and did not let up despite UWF attempts to catch up. Pitcher Emily Burge got the start and the loss, and was relieved by Jillian LaFrance in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Caurie Miller was responsible for West Florida's only two runs with a homerun in the top of the second inning. Heather Bell was two-for-four, and Burge had a double, proving to be the only West Florida player to have hits in all three games.

A 6-run first inning for North Alabama set the pace for the game. UNA had five hits in the first inning, including three doubles and a homerun. Burge walked at the beginning of the second inning to put a runner on for UWF. Caurie Miller took matters into her own hands with a two-run homerun over the left field fence for a 6-2 score. However, these two runs would be UWF's only runs.

UNA would go on to score another run in the bottom of the second inning, while the rest of the game would remain scoreless. Back-to-back singles from Bell and Whitney Gay to lead off the top of the sixth inning looked promising, but the Argos ran out of steam before any runs could score.

The loss ended GSC tournament play for the Argos, but not post-season play altogether. West Florida will travel to Barry University in south Florida on Tuesday to begin regional play against UAH on Wednesday at 12:30 PM (1:30pm Eastern Time). This game will be broadcast live through Stretch Internet along with the rest of the West Florida games at the regional tournament.
