MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - West Florida was defeated by Saint Leo University on Thursday afternoon, 2-0. Pitcher Taren Walton suffered the loss giving up seven hits, striking out five Lions. Both runs scored by Saint Leo were unearned, as both runners scored on fielding errors. The Argonauts managed just three hits in the loss, as Nicky VanCamp was responsible for two. Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year winner Ashley Urbanik was the winning pitcher striking out twelve Argos.
The first SLU run came in the first inning off a West Florida fielding error, and leftfielder Melissa Chastang saved a second run from scoring in the second inning with a stellar throw to home to catch an SLU runner for the third out. VanCamp's singles came in the fourth and sixth innings threatening for West Florida but the runners were unable to advance.
Saint Leo added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning of a second West Florida error. Tatiana Casis singled for Saint Leo and Urbanik followed with a walk to put two runners on for Saint Leo. An Ally Maddox single to the left side would eventually give West Florida trouble in the field to allow Casis to score from second.
The Argos will take on Tampa University at 11am (10am CST) in the elimination round. Both teams have a win and a loss under their belts during the South Region Tournament. A matchup earlier in the year led to a split between the teams. The game will be broadcast live, or can be followed on the live stats link both found on www.goargos.com.
